Lamp fail...

Posted by Christina // 13 Replies

A little while back I got way too excited to take part in a makeover challenge….especially considering I wasn’t on an episode of Jenny Jones Geek to Chic….I was just taking a very classy lamp from Lamps Plus and giving it some holiday glitz.  You know how I love a crafting challenge.

The fine folks at Hometalk (have you been there….if you haven’t what the heck are you waiting for) and the sweethearts at Lamps Plus were kind enough to send us a snazzy fillable lamp to makeover just in time for the holidays.  What?  Don’t tell me that holiday preparation can’t start in August, Scrooge….I say bah humbug all the way to the ornament aisle with that nonsense.  I could start Christmas crafts in March if Tim would let me.

So I began brainstorming.  I let my Christmas creativity creep all up in my head.  I came up with a brilliant plan, no ornaments, no pinecones, no lights.  I wanted to fill my lamp with a glorious Christmas scene for everyone in our home to admire.  Our dogs are totally into Christmas scenes.

I would put snow in the bottom and take those old Christmas figurines that old aunt Edna gave me and give them the razzle dazzle.  Then I would doodle some pretty gold dots for the daytime effect and when you flip that switch BAM…you have snow falling on our little town.  It was going to be the Christmas lamp trifecta, well…doublefecta since it really only had two looks.

Here is a sneak peek of us brainstorming our pretty city pre-gold dots.  It sort of looks like a Halloween town so I feel like we were killing two birds ya know.  We give love to all holidays, no discrimination. brainstorming-a-lamp-challenge So I scavenged for fake snow.  Seriously, did you forget it is August.  Finally settled on white sand and got to work laying the fancy down on my little people. patience-painting-the-little-figurines Then the unthinkable happened, I tried to put it together.  How do I put sand in from the bottom and keep my little people all adorable.  Well, I left that part up to Timbo.

See we will just glue the people to the foam see.  And then see we will just pour the sand in the top see, and then I will just use these here tongs to perfectly place your little people.  Oh wait…how will I do that without the sand coming out the bottom?  And this long rod will make it very hard to maneuver in there.  Well, actually…this isn’t going to work.  Come up with Plan B.

Literally, after spending hours hand-painting figurines and taking photos and searching for fake snow…I was told to, ahem, and I quote, “scratch that”.  Squeeze me?

If you need me I will be at home, rocking back and forth while I try to think of some sort of Christmas miracle.

Tim and I love to entertain.

I kind of want to make it my job, but I feel like my habit of procrastinating would really be working against me.  For instance, when people showed up to our Fourth of July backyard bash I was in my swimsuit…still cooking and panicked that I had not set up the food table or taken pictures for the blog.  Tisk, tisk.

Then it hit me.  As much as I would love to be the blogger that had her Fourth of July tutorials up two weeks before the holiday, giving you all inspiration and praying for pins….it is just not me.  I tip my hat to you ladies, and inside my guts are jealous.  I unfortunately embrace chaos, and work best under pressure.

In the midst of yelling at Tim to take as many photos as possible while cutting out watermelon stars, and screaming at everyone not to touch any of the food, I had an epiphany.  I had to stop trying to be something I am not.

I started this blog as a creative outlet for my analytical mind.  I wanted to document our lives together and be inspired to live more beautifully.  I wanted to enjoy life more, and make new friends.

Let me tell you something, telling people not to touch the food until you get “the shot” is not going to make you friends.

Hi my name is Christina, and I fell victim to blog pressure.

Trying to keep up with the newest social medium, joining every creative network, and spending hours criticizing our projects.  That has been life for the last couple weeks.  Tim doesn’t approve, and in that moment of hangry girl madness….I changed my ‘tude.

I decided to kick back.  Enjoy the day, and not guilt myself for taking the next two days off.  Hope you all can understand and please forgive me, I know not what I do.

Are these pictures the greatest Fourth of July party photos ever, nope.
But that’s not what is important….whats important is the fun that was had and the margaritas that were consumed.  Which was a lot.

Without any further rambling, this is a bit of our backyard BBQ. fourth of july bbq our tasty fourth food our backyard bbq for the fourth What did you do for the Fourth?
Have you ever been overcome with pressure to do things you don’t want to?
Ever tried to make Rice Krispie treats blue….yea about that.

While I do heart anything patriotic…but I am generally not a fan of Independence Day.

Gasp!  A holiday Christina doesn’t like.

Not sure if Will Smith scarred me for life, or if it just my disdain for loud noises.  It could also have something to do with the fact that for the first 25 years of my life I “thought” I didn’t like BBQ sauce.  I am not sure why, but other than decking myself out in red, white, and blue and enjoying the day off I usually don’t do too much for this holiday.

Now please don’t come at me with “I hate ‘Merica” bashing.  The Star Spangled Banner makes me cry, we fly our flag high, and I am eternally grateful for the freedom our soldiers fight for every single day.  I just don’t like things that go boom and shake the house mmkay.

This year, that is all changing.

We decided that 2013 would be the year we would host a Fourth of July BBQ.
So this year, our home is decked out in stars & stripes. full mantle My mantle makes me happy. fourth of july mantle What is your least favorite holiday?
Any good Fourth recipes I should know about?
Know of any “quiet” firework shows?

It’s my girlfriend’s birthday today.  I would like to send a thank you out to her parents for doing the dang thang and making me a princess.

Ok, that was a little weird.  My apologies.  Not as weird as this though… il_570xN_287409286

Happy Birthday Starburst, 27 is weird.

You can buy that awesome card right here.

This is what I would ask for.  Who has the hook-up on a birthday fairy? christinas birthday wishlist 1.  I have talked about it for months, and T even bought me a wooden one, but the time has come for me to become a real life duck mom.  I want to build a habitat and teach it tricks and snuggle it while I am by the pool.  Does that make me a weirdo?  So be it.

2.  Will I ever get sick of washi?  Probably not.

3.  How could I possibly resist a nail polish named “Naughty Nautical” in good conscious.

4.  Joy Cho was the keynote at Alt for Everyone and now I can’t get enough.  I need to soak up all of her knowledge and I need to do it now.  You think she would adopt me?

5.  The first time, ever I saw your face soles.  The gorgeous Elsie has rocked these shoes a time or two and I’ve had them on my wish list for way too long now.

6.  My phone dies….every. single. day.  The Mophie case recharges your phone with the flip of a switch.  Perfect for Pinterest happy fools like me.

7.  You can wear your twitter handle around your neck these days.  I see so many benefits to this.  Conversation piece.  Potential for that creepy guy at the library to find you and stalk your life, but hey it’s a new follower.  Simplifying the whole “can you id this body” thing.

8.  I have a camera crush on Epiphanie bags.  Right now we have a pretty awesome Canon backpack, but I think our camera deserves a stylish alternative.

I can’t believe my birthday is in less than a week.  I love birthdays, but this one feels odd.  I am realizing just how close I am to thirty, and how different my life is from what I imagined.

I am so thankful for another birthday, and instead of asking for presents or parties I am hosting an Etsy “Craft for the Community” gathering so that I can share my aging-happiness with everyone!  If you are in the area please come join me, I promise there won’t be any singing!

What did you do for your last birthday?
Are you where you thought you would be at this age?
What do you want for your birthday, besides world peace?

This Friday I have a lot on my mind, like the fact that Mother’s Day is this weekend and I haven’t even started stringing pom-pom garland and crafting gold leaf floral bouquets.  I’m not a very good blogger, or daughter apparently.

The problem with waiting until the last-minute to start planning your holidays is that you can’t order cute lockets online and procrastination flowers are always on the pricey side.  So craft I must and craft I will.

For those of you that are sinking in the same puddle, one solution I have found is Etsy prints.  A lot of times after you buy them, the seller will just send you the file to print.  Of course, every shop is different but this technique has gotten me out of many a bind.

Here are some of my Mama reppin’ favorites. mothers day etsy prints 1.  One of my favorite books growing up.
2.  Could this be anymore perfect.
3.  Totally adorable.
4.  Ain’t it the truth.
5.  My mama’s favorite quote.
6.  Such a great song, perfect for mothers.
7.  My all-time favorite quote.
8.  So cute for the new mom.

Have you already got all your mother’s day shenanigans planned out?  We luckily have Tim’s mothers present all figured out, thanks to a sweet little hint she gave us at Christmas.  Better late than never right, at least that is what I am telling myself.  If only my mom gave hints.

What are you getting your mom?
For the moms, what are you hoping for?
Is it inappropriate to finger paint your present still?
