A mini-vacay recap....

Posted by Christina // 8 Replies

For our long weekend, we decided to take a mini-vacay with the family.

It started off great, got a little bumpy, and ended with a bang. where our mini vacay to KC began Ok seriously, if you walk into a hotel and it is swarming with tweens for any sort of event…just turn around and run.  Run right out the fancy foyer and sleep in your car.  You can thank me later with cookies.

We were lucky enough to be surrounded by middle school softball players for a tournament.  At first, I was all googly-eyed.  I always dreamed of playing on a team (any team) that got to travel and compete.  They were so cute with their braids and braces, I was smitten dreaming of the day Tim and I are hauling all the kids around trying to become parents of superstars.

Then came the screaming, and the dance parties (that I wasn’t invited to), the running of the halls, and the incessant giggling.  I was about to break a pitchers arm, and then it happened.  While drifting off into sweet, sweet slumber.  Flashing lights, blaring sirens.  A late night wake up call.  Furious is an understatement.

Don’t get me wrong, at fourteen I would have thought this was hilarious too.  In my late twenties, watching babies crying in terror and grandmas hustling down the steps…it loses the humor.  Can’t we just watch Chris Farley re-runs instead girls?  I’ll pop the popcorn, you can braid my hair.

I bet those little boogers called up Mother Nature too. a series of bad events on our KC trip then came a KC miracle the end of our kc road trip I know that we could have done without the late night fire alarm and the downpour, but I think this trip will go down in the books as fantastic.

I’m sure when we are eighty we will still be laughing about that silly fire drill.

Have you been on any fun trips lately?
Ever pulled the fire alarm as a prank?
Have any travel disaster stories?

Can we move in?

On our KC trip round two we had a wedding to go to, much more exciting than running a 5K in the heat wave called July.  More on KC round one right here.

The wedding was bea-u-tiful and we had a blast dancing till the roosters were crowing.

The next day, we wanted to take it easy…and do something fun.  Enter Sea Life.

It is the brand spanking new Aquarium in Kansas City, MO.  Of course we had to check it out.

It’s actually connected to the Lego Land, so it makes for a super fun and exhausting day.  When we first walked in I saw the cute Lego design and knew this was my kind of place.

How cute would that be in a kids room?  Oh the possibilities!

I have to say, my favorite room was the very first room…I really feel like I could put a king sized bed in there and call it home.

It was so beautiful, and relaxing, and peaceful.  I am really working on Tim to put wall to wall tanks in our bedroom, then work out the whole massive current and millions of fishies thing and presto…Heaven.

Tim was thrilled that I brought my camera so that he could pose for three gazillion photos….

and trust me, there was an abundance of photos.  He was even MORE excited when he had to take the pictures.

 Can you feel the love?

This aquarium was chock full of fish and information, there were fin facts and lots of trivia along the way.  The best part were the “head poppers”.  I would like to personally thank whoever designed this place for all of these fun stops.

I’m not sure what was more fun, seeing if I could fit in to those oh-so-teeny spots or seeing the tiny fishie bellies.

Another favorite was the jellyfish room.  As we were walking in I spotted these bad boys.  Unfortunate news…they don’t sell them in the gift shop.  Sorry y’all.

They were huge…and I will find a way to craft them for a kids room or something.  After oogling the light up jellies for about ten minutes I got to the real deal. KC Aquarium, new, fish, saltwater, adventure, fun, Sealife

I bet the song “Tiny Dancers” is really about jellyfish.

Alas, our stroll through jellyfish way was quickly over shadowed.  The underwater tunnel was supposed to be the main attraction.  To keep it real, I was not impressed.  My sister was…

she could barely contain her excitement.

My dear, sweet mama and my lovable sister joined us on this adventure.  Thank goodness…more photographers!

Aren’t they precious…I feel like I shoulda wore my specs.

The tunnel was neat because there were killer sharks the size of my car.  Ok, there were sharks and rays and that was exciting.

It was just too short.  It was over before I could even smuggle one out in my cooler.  I guess I would have been more of a fan if I would have had time to make friends with the shark, make them smile so I could get a glimpse of that big ol’ grill.  That’s all.  Instead, I befriended this guy.

He said he will write, I sure hope he does.

KC Aquarium, new, fish, saltwater, adventure, fun, Sealife We did manage one tunnel picture…although I wanted at least forty.

KC Aquarium, new, fish, saltwater, adventure, fun, Sealife My buddy Ray eased the grief of not meeting my picture quota.  And can we check out his friend Earl the Eel back there…the big green worm creature.  Ew.

This room had a balcony with a “sea-through” floor so I could get a good look at Ray & Earl.  I prayed that it would break so I could swim with my friends, it didn’t.  I’ve been slamming Bic Macs ever since.  Next time Ray, next time.

Check out the background, can we say party.  Next birthday, it’s so on.

Mom enjoyed the big tank from dry land…scaredy cat.

Then we hit the motherload….my one true love.

Seahorses.

I am now more determined than ever to get some of those!

Now our plans are….open one in St. Louis and call it home!

We have been hanging out in Kansas City a lot lately.

It’s one of the only “vacation destinations” within weekend driving distance.  Sure there is always Branson, Lake of the Ozarks, and I guess Chicago if you want to watch the Cardinals beat the Cubs….but there isn’t an abundance of weekend trips around these parts.  We make our own fun going on float trips and visiting wineries.  These are Missouri folk’s weekend getaways.

Our first trip out there seemed like a great idea when we signed up for it….and then a heat wave came.  And then running a 5K that we never trained for in the middle of a July heat wave seemed a little insane.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners Luckily we were four hours from home, so even if people stopped and laughed at us panting on the ground in puddles of sweat….we’d never see them again.  Right?

We were scared.

This was also a huge step for Tim in overcoming his anxiety.  Running in a crowd of 30,000 strangers while people throw colored corn starch at you…yea no problem.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners

We just focused on the positive, like our sweet new kicks that were supposed to motivate us to run.  Not so much.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners, bright, nike, shoes

And once we got running….it was just SO. MUCH. FUN.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners   5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners   5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners

I’m not kidding, like funnest day of our lives….both of our lives.  Not just my boytoy agreeing to a crazy harebrained scheme and then telling me it was fun so he can watch baseball.  He thought it was fun with a capital F-U-N.  Ahem, what anxiety?

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners, royals stadium, kiss my man

Then our minds were blown, the running wasn’t the funnest part.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners, finale, party

This was.

An explosion of powdery bright goodness that makes everything in the world seem right.  Or it just looks cool and then you realize you are choking on said powder.  Details.

5K, color run, kansas city, first time runners, finale, party Now the really crazy part…..we are thinking about doing it again in St. Louis.  Maybe we will train this time, sike!

When we were “training” for the Color Run by watching videos and peeping pin boards…everyone said that pictures didnt do it justice.  They are right.  So we made a video.

Watch it twice and Enjoy.
