Last weekend was exciting.  I talked my friend Trisha into taking a 16 hour road trip to Georgia with me to attend the Maiedae Mixer.  There were laughs, there were cracked windshields, there were up-all-night conversations, and there were cupcakes.  I couldn’t have asked for a better trip (well minus that whole windshield thing) and I learned so much.

I got so wrapped up in all the fun that I barely took any photos.  I have about fifteen on my memory card and every single one of them is a blurry mess of giggles and dancing.  So instead I am relying on the #hashtagged photos that other people posted, thanks for saving my hiney once again Instagram. output_CMUltX And thanks to these girls for taking awesome photos.  Hi Jenny!  Hi Savannah!  Hi Amber!  Hi Anna!  Hi Hillery!  Hi Jana!  Hi Stephanie!  Hi Meghan!  Hi Holly!  Hi Natalie!

On top of being a completely gorgeous event, the hosts won me over with adorable goodie bags. the goodies I couldn’t even tell you what I am most excited for because it would be too hard to pick a favorite, I love it all.

They also knew the way to my heart….with a photobooth. smilebooth photos group shot I just can’t get enough. throwin gang signs This little shindig wasn’t all about coffee, cupcakes, and conversation though.  I wanted to learn.  I wanted a crash course on blogger meetups and boy did I get one.

Here are the five things no one warned me about. eat dinner before you go Trisha and I planned on eating, I promise.  But it wasn’t until we arrived at the Mixer that we realized we hadn’t ate in 10 hours.  In all honesty, I am not sure I could have eaten anything that would have calmed those figgity butterflies down but at least I could have had a base coat for all the sugar I was about to ingest.  I ended up getting a little tummy ache after I came down from the sugar high, so maybe next time some Saltines will hang around in my purse just in case. or you will struggle You may notice that in the last Smilebooth photo up there, my hands were quite full…the hand not throwing the gang signs.  All night I seriously struggled to hold onto business cards, my phone, a camera, drinks, and my overall sanity.  Everyone says to bring along a business card holder, but I am warning you to bring a functional one.  I dropped mine on two different occasions, and opening it was a joke.  This could be the reason for my lack of photos as well.  Next time I am bringing pockets and a wristlet to tame all my important bidness. so talk to people It took me a good hour before I was ready to approach anyone new.  In my head everyone already knew each other and no one wanted to talk to little ole Missourian me.  I think everyone goes through this at some point, and I can usually tell myself “these people will never see you again” but in this context where it is very possible I will go home and stalk them….that mantra was useless.  After Meghan was brave enough to come up and chit chat, I realized that’s what we were there for.  To meet people, to connect, to step out of our comfort zone.  Next time, I hope to walk in with a better attitude. shine bright like a diamond Not much to say here, just wish I had those handy wipes that tame the whole “shine bright like a diamond” thing I had going on my face.  Never makes for cute pictures, and probably doesn’t make you any more approachable.  Should have brought gum too, one macaron in and I was paranoid-breath-checker-girl. practice your moves Not sure why this surprised me.  Bloggers have style, bloggers have grace….and bloggers can wobble.  Be prepared and practice your moves before hand so that you can hang with the Beyonces.  I did not, so I just snapped pictures like the paparazzi and called it a night.  Next time I will have the moves like Jagger.

Do you have any tips to add to my list?
Have you ever dropped a stack of business cards in a dress that’s too short?
Any recommendations for some no-shine goop?

Let's get real.....

This post is not my usual DIY project, or funny throwback, or fish tank tutorial.  It’s a wee bit more dreary and personal.  I get it if you don’t want to read it, so instead here’s a joke.  You don’t have to read the joke either, I can’t tell you what to do.

A mushroom walks into a bar. The bartender says, “Hey, get out of here! We don’t serve mushrooms here”. Mushroom says, “why not? I’m a fungai!”  Cue the belly laugh.

Now brace yourself for my Dear Diary entry.

You know when you have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day…we all have them.  Yesterday was one of those days.

I didn’t get much sleep the night before, which always sets you up for success right?  My stomach was rumbling and my brain was racing.  I am not sure if it had anything to do with yesterday’s post, but bad nights generally lead into worse days for me.

I try my darndest to stay positive and draw up plans for buttons that will “insta-fix” any situation.  Wouldn’t that be great, if a magical button could turn your day around.

Oh you have a flat tire….boom you also have a winning lottery ticket.  Dream big my friends.

Some things aren’t fixable though right?  The death of a loved one for instance, is there anything that can ease the pain?  No seriously, if you know please fill me in.  I’ll pay big bucks for that information.

It always amazes me that as a grown woman sometimes the only thing that can make me feel better is a hug from my mom and a long talk with my dad.  Family is the greatest.  So many people don’t have that luxury, which sinks my heart right down to the floor.

So for anyone needing a hug today, come lay on my shoulder.  I will pat your head and sing “Soft Kitty” to you.  Come to mama.

What do you do when you are having a bad day?

Hope your weekend was amazing!  If it wasn’t then go enter our giveaway and maybe that will make it better.  Heck, even if it was amazing….go enter.

This Monday, I wanted to do something very near and dear to my heart.  I hope maybe my story may move you to join me in this Monday’s Challenge. monday 22 thank a firefighter A few years ago, I went through a series of events that forever changed my thinking.  One of those major events was when my gramma passed away in a fire.  I was unbelievably close with my grandparents and it still hurts my heart to think about her last phone call to 911.  She knew she wouldn’t make it out alive.

Three months earlier, we had a fairly casual conversation regarding adding steps to her back porch.  I had helped my grampa build the porch nearly fifteen years earlier.  By “helped” I mean brought him lemonade and handed him nails in between dance breaks, but the one thing we didn’t build on that porch was steps.

During that simple conversation, my gramma confided that she was terrified of a house fire because she knew that there was only one way out of the house.  If she went anywhere but out the front door, she would be trapped.  Painful, painful memories now.  Oh how I wished I had built those steps.

My gramma didn’t head towards the front door, I would assume the smoke disoriented her and I pray she just fell asleep.  Then I get to the really horrific part, the part no one talks about, the thoughts that I bury deep inside.  The thoughts of fire eating me alive.  Do you ever think about that?  Is it something you are scared of?

Did you know that there are people who actually run into fires?  I am sure you did, but did you know that almost 73% of them are volunteers.  They don’t even get paid to run into something I am completely terrified of.

My gramma was one of 3,430 people that died in a house fire that year, and every year over 100 firefighters are taken.  To say it is dangerous work is an understatement.  Not everyone can be saved, especially in a rural area, but there are thousands of people saved every year thanks to firefighters.

When was the last time you actually thanked a firefighter?  Have you ever?  This week I am sending a card to the brave men and women who ran into my grandparents house, who tried to save my gramma.  I am also sending a card to our local firehouse, you know getting on their good side!

Do you know a firefighter?
Ever been affected by a fire?

Happy June….wait June? That means it is officially summer in my book. Summers have always been the highlight of the year, more so when it meant I was on a three-month vacation from books and bullying.  Those were the days, and I decided I want to start reliving them. Instead of taking a three-month hiatus from that thing I call my job I decided to join some amazing co-hosts to bring you the Summer of My Youth Link Up Party.

The idea is simple: relive your youth, blog about it, link it up!  Go somewhere or do something that reminds you of summertime when you were a kid – read a book (or series), visit a place that has meaning, make that recipe you couldn’t get enough of, watch the show or movie you know all the words to, or listen to that CD you wore out.  It can be whatever brings back those awesome summer memories!

Before we dive into the deets, let’s check out the awesome ladies who are playing hosts this summer:
The ladies bringing you your link up are: Love From HomeCharleston Crafted, Tarnished Silver, Jo, My Gosh!, Homemade Ocean, and Hungry Janey!

Now the deets!

Link Up Schedule:
TODAY!  Link your blog up below and let us know you’re on board!  We want to where to be looking for those awesome summer memories.
JULY 1ST, AUGUST 1ST, SEPTEMBER 1ST  Visit the co-hosts on the 1st of each month of the summer for a fresh link up where you can share your Summer of My Youth blog post – tell us what you’ve done, where you’ve gone, how you’re reliving summertime.  You can do all three months or just link up one – the choice is up to you!

Link Up Rules:
1. Follow the co-hosts!
2. Link up your blog! You only need to link up to ONE co-host to be linked to all!
3. Get started on recreating your childhood.
4. Come back July 1st to link up your ‘Summer of My Youth’ post with us!

I am so excited to be co-hosting the Summer Of My Youth Link Up.

I am even more excited to relive my favorite summer songs, don’t mind me….I am just busting moves over here.  Bring on the neon. 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 Isn’t funny how songs can take you right back to setting up your first lemonade stand, or hairbrush karaoke, or high school prom?

Do you remember those songs?
What were your favorite songs growing up?
Are you doing the Macarena now?
